How to Tune a Guitar by Ear

Every guitarist ends up somewhere without a tuner eventually — a jam at a friend's house, a campfire, a stage where the pedal battery just died. Tuning by ear is the skill that covers you there, and it does something a tuner can't: it trains you to actually hear when two pitches disagree, which pays off in every other part of your playing, from bending in tune to hearing when a chord voicing has gone sour.

The method below gets a guitar in tune with itself. If you also want it at concert pitch — so it matches recordings and other instruments — you need one reference note from outside: a piano, another tuned instrument, or a chromatic tuner like the one on this site. One good reference string is enough; the rest of the process propagates it across the instrument.

Pick your reference method

There are three common ways to generate reference pitches on the guitar itself:

Step by step: the 5th-fret method

  1. Tune the low E string to your reference (or accept it as-is if you only need the guitar in tune with itself). In standard tuning it sits at E2, about 82.41 Hz.
  2. Fret the low E at the 5th fret — that's an A — and pluck it together with the open A string. Adjust the A string's tuning peg until the two notes stop clashing. Open A is A2, 110 Hz.
  3. Fret the A string at the 5th fret and match the open D string (D3, 146.83 Hz).
  4. Fret the D string at the 5th fret and match the open G string (G3, 196 Hz).
  5. Fret the G string at the 4th fret — the one exception — and match the open B string (B3, 246.94 Hz).
  6. Fret the B string at the 5th fret and match the open high E string (E4, 329.63 Hz).

Always tune up to the target pitch. If a string is sharp, drop it below the target and come back up. Tuning upward keeps tension on the gears and the nut so the string doesn't slip flat the moment you start playing.

Listen for the beats

The tell that two strings are almost — but not quite — in tune is a slow pulsing or "wobble" in the combined sound, called beating. When the pitches are far apart you hear two separate notes. As they get close, the notes fuse into one sound with a rhythmic wah-wah-wah riding on top. The closer you get, the slower the beating, until it stops entirely: that's in tune. Don't listen for "the same note" — listen for the wobble slowing down and disappearing. It's a much more sensitive signal than pitch comparison alone.

Verify with a chromatic tuner

When you're done, check your work against the chromatic tuner. It will show you how many cents each string landed from its target — a direct score for your ear. If you consistently land sharp or flat on a particular string, that's useful feedback. When ear tuning fails

Ear tuning has real limits. In a noisy room, the beating is masked and you're guessing. Old, dead strings don't hold pitch consistently along their length, so the 5th-fret note and the open string can disagree even when both are "right" — new strings fix more tuning problems than most people expect. And if the guitar's intonation is off (the 12th-fret note is noticeably sharp or flat versus the open string), no amount of open-string tuning will make fretted chords sit right.
