DADGAD Tuning: The Dsus4 Wash

DADGAD is the modal tuning — the one players reach for when they want the guitar to stop sounding like chords on a grid and start sounding like an open, ringing wash. Strummed with no fingers down, it produces a Dsus4 chord: neither major nor minor, unresolved, and endlessly reusable as a drone. Three strings move from standard tuning, all of them down, which makes it an easy trip there and back.

How to tune it

From standard tuning (E-A-D-G-B-E), three strings drop a whole step and three stay put:

With the chromatic tuner open, take each moving string down slowly: the display will read flat against the old note, re-label the pitch as the new one, then count cents against the new target — stop when it centers in the Tuned band. If you overshoot, drop a little below and come back up to pitch, which keeps the string from slipping flat afterward. The middle strings rarely move during all this, but a full six-string check at the end costs ten seconds.

Two built-in ear checks: the outer D strings sit exactly one and two octaves below the first string's D4, and octaves ring beat-free when true. The 5th string A and the 2nd string A are an octave pair too.

Why it sounds the way it does

The open strings spell D-A-D-G-A-D: roots, fifths, and a single fourth (the G). There's no third anywhere — and the third is the note that commits a chord to major or minor. That's why the open strum is a suspended chord, and why almost anything you play over it sounds consonant: melodies on the top strings float over open drones without clashing against a committed harmony. Fretting just one or two strings while the rest ring open produces big, harp-like voicings that would take four fingers in standard tuning.

Who uses it

DADGAD's modern lineage runs through the British and Irish folk revival — it became the default guitar tuning for Celtic music, where its drones mimic the pipes and its suspended openness fits modal tunes that never resolve to a simple major or minor. From there it spread to acoustic fingerstyle composers, who use it for the same reasons: self-accompanying bass drones, ringing open strings, and melody lines that sit comfortably on the re-tuned top strings. It has a rock pedigree too — most famously in heavy, riff-based acoustic-electric writing where the low D power and the modal ambiguity both pull their weight.

If you play with a capo, DADGAD keeps working: the intervals travel with the capo, so the same shapes give you the same wash in any key.

The caveat: your chord shapes don't transfer

Drop D changes one string; DADGAD changes three, including two of the strings your chord vocabulary leans on hardest. Standard chord shapes don't survive the trip. An open E shape, a C shape, a barred A-minor — all of them land on wrong notes here. Treat DADGAD as a small new instrument: learn a handful of its own shapes (they're mostly one- and two-finger), lean on the open strings, and let the tuning do the harmonic work. Players who try to translate their standard-tuning vocabulary chord-for-chord usually bounce off; players who start from drones and melody usually get something musical in the first sitting.
